As we have discussed in Weeks 3 and 4, our everyday lives and communities are filled with problems to be solved.
On our commutes to work and college, there is often too much traffic, and public transportation may be unreliable or expensive.
At work, we may struggle to attract new customers, to improve a flawed product or service we offer, or to contain costs.
In our neighborhoods, we may notice that public spaces like parks are neglected and that needed services are lacking.
In our families, we may find that our children are struggling at school, or that relatives are suffering from diseases that ought to be preventable.
Sometimes it seems nobody steps up to resolve the problems. As indicated in Chapter 12, one of the best ways to make positive change is to write about a problem and offer possible solutions to leaders or communities who can take action to resolve the problem. This is precisely what you’ll be doing in this writing assignment. Continuing with the same local problem you explored and researched over the past two weeks, you will apply your new expertise as you construct and support an essay recommending a solution to that problem. The essay will be due at the end of Week 6.
Begin by rereading the Solving a Problem in Your Community overview page in Modules under Introduction and Resources and the detailed project descriiption in the Week 3 Lesson page. Then read textbook Chapter 12 and this week’s Lesson page.
To present a complete and effective argument, plan out your research-based argument with a clear, logical organization like this:
Introduction
Hook
Topic, its importance and relevance to reader
Specific focus and purpose
Thesis
Problem
Causes and effects/impact
History of what’s been done and its effectiveness
Potential solutions
Option and its advantages/disadvantages
Option and its advantages/disadvantages
Recommended solution

Synthesis/summary/significance and thesis
Next steps
Call to action
We recommend that you start with an outline. Add details, including source information and citations, then publish your essay using your outline as a roadmap. Cite as you write.
Your problem-solution essay should be at least 1500 words long (5-6 pages).
Your argument should be supported by at least 5 academic quality sources. Include in-text citations for all sourced information as soon as you begin using each source. Include a reference list with full bibliographic citations for all sources used.
Follow current APA guidelines for essay format, content, and citations. You should have a title page, references page, and section titles for each body section. See the APA template in Files.
Post at least three pages of your essay document to the Week 5 Discussion for peer review. Also consider using the various options for tutoring. Submit your revised, complete essay by the end of Week 6.
Successful essays will meet these expectations:
At least 1500 words
At least 5 academic quality sources used and cited
Current APA format, content and citations
Formatted as a Word document .docx file
Submitted via the Week 6 assignment page
This essay will be used to assess your individual progress toward course objectives. Your scores will be aggregated to gauge all students’ progress toward general education learning outcomes.
